Now that most of the seasonal boats are leaving Los Suenos, the sailfish have returned in impressive numbers for our year round boats. The “Spanish Fly” has averaged 9 releases a day for the past 10 days and managed to release three marlin-one black was about 700lbs.

The reef and inshore fishing has also been good-plenty of roosters and dorado and a few amberjack.

Fishing has been great one day and not so great the next day over the past couple of weeks for the “Spanish Fly”. Sometimes the fish were all clumped together in a big group making it easy for our fishermen to score hits and releases. The following day, the fish would scattered all over the ocean making our crew work harder to find them.

The Randy Strauss group, hooking their own, went 11 for 23 on Friday and 4 for 12 on Saturday.

Expectations were very high for the “Spanish Fly” going into the second leg of the HMY Yacht tournament in Los Suenos. With so many good boats and anglers they couldn’t possibly win the second leg-well, they almost did! They were tied for first place going into the last day and they couldn’t pull it out. That one slow day of fishing dropped them to fourth out of 50 boats, but they did manage to win the overall grand prize with the most fish caught during the two tournaments: 2 marlin and 97 sail fish.

After a frustrating couple of weeks of seeing lots of fish, but failing to get their full cooperation, it has finally turned around for the “Spanish Fly”. Two days ago, they released five for eight sails and then yesterday, they released 10. And, today, they decided to go rooster fishing and released 28, some as big as 50lbs.

The Spanish Fly has been on a roll since winning the tournament last week. Today, the boat set a new personal record: 42 sails and 1 dorado. No big fish tale!!!

The first leg of the Los Suenos Signature Billfish Tournament kicked off on January 19 with 47 boats. After three days of hard fishing, the “Spanish Fly” came out on top with a first place finish-70 sails and one marlin released in three days. Congratulations to anglers Larry Drivon, Richard Lebo, and Coco Cambronero!! And, of course, Captain Daniel Espinosa who always knows how to find the fish!
Watch out for these guys in March-they are a big threat to take the overall title.
2nd place “Game On” with 68 sails and one marlin

The past few weeks have been great marlin fishing for both the “Spanish Fly and “The Bite”. Both boats had about 2 shots a day at marlin-black, blue and striped. Yesterday, Roger Rex and Richard Lebo went fishing on “The Bite” and Richard managed to hook up a 600lb. black on a 30lb. test and released her in just 20 minutes.

Sail fishing has been inconsistent-three to seven bites on a slow day and seven to fifteen bites on a good day

What a great day, angler was Dave Garton, the fish was 82in long w/ girth
60in.
In general, fishing has improved-anything is better than hurricane rains, green water and no fish that we experienced in October. This past week the “Spanish Fly” released a total of 4 marlin, 10 sails, a boat load of dorado and tuna and much happier fishermen!

After weeks of just bad fishing, it turned around in the waters off Los Suenos (at least for now!). The “Spanish Fly” hosted the Weaver family from Florida and they got everything and more! They caught 21 dorado and 3 marlin-no big fish tale!!!

No good news to report the last few weeks due to the heavy rains that have pushed the blue water out over 60 miles from Los Suenos and Quepos. Fishing has been painfully slow for our anglers-one blue marlin over 300lbs. released by our anglers yesterday and the day before that a few small tuna, an amberjack and a snapper caught on 26 by Steve Teague’s group.

Fortunately, we have some of the most experienced fishermen on our boat who understand it’s fishing, not catching! Waiting for some blue water!

For the last three days, the “Spanish Fly” had the pleasure to fish with Lance Herlong and his group from Florida. Their totals were very impressive: 13 for 17 sails, 2 big roosters, a boat load of little tuna, a few dorado, a cubera snapper and a 300lb. blue marlin and pulled the hook on the second marlin. For a few of the guys, it was their first sailfish-we were happy to deliver for them!

On Sunday, August 14, 2005 Mike McDonald, veteran angler, who placed 3rd in the January 2005 Los Suenos Billfish tournament, returned to fish again on board Captain Bill Kieldsen’s 35’Bertram, Sailfish. He brought his father, Gordon his son, Jeff and his son’s friend, Shaun McDowell.

His father battled a 120 pound fish. His son and friend, who had never caught a Sailfish, released 2 each and Mike caught 3 more. They had 13 bites total, which is good for this time of year. The Sailfish were from 80 to 120 pounds. They were fishing 20 miles South of Los Suenos with no rain and flat calm seas.

This was a great week for the “Spanish Fly and her fishermen! All week long it was catch what you want-plenty of sails, mackerel, dorado, snapper, amberjack, and best of all, a boat load of big yellow fin tuna. Sushi for a long time!
