Floridians Jeff Hollingsworth and his wife had the pleasure of fishing with the “Spanish Fly” this week. They were looking to catch their very first sail fish and the crew did not disappoint-they went 9 for 14.

The second day they decided to go inshore for roosters. Unfortunately, the roosters did not cooperate with only one release, but then they went reef fishing and caught a 50lb. amberjack, several snapper, a few dorado and a small tuna.

Friday, Jeff Horn and his group chose to fish for sails and they had a great day-7 for 10 on sails. To Book The Spanish Fly Click here.

Ed Frieze and his family had the pleasure of fishing with the “Spanish Fly” and they were looking for some world records for his son and daughter. No records, but they had a great time! Friday, they were getting the hang of hooking these Pacific sailfish and missed the first couple, so the crew helped out. They wrapped up the day with 4 for 8.

Then, on Sunday, they went inshore and caught a bunch of Spanish Mackerel, two small Rooster fish, then they went offshore in the afternoon and caught 2 more sailfish.

After a few days of much-needed rest, the Spanish Fly was back in action on Friday and put up some impressive numbers for this time of year. Keith Joyce and his group raised 11 sails, released 7, caught a 50 lb. dorado and several small tuna.

The next day, Harry Vaughn and his group from Florida released 2 sails, but had much better luck with the tuna-they ran through three big schools and were eating sushi all the way in.

The “Spanish Fly” began the week strong by catching or releasing all species of fish daily-sail fish releases, yellow fin tuna up to 30lbs., a 50lb. dorado, and amberjack. Wednesday was very slow for John Cline and his group from No.Carolina-only two sail bites all day. But, Friday the guys were back on target with 3 for 5 sails and plenty of yellow fin tuna up to 40lbs.

The beginning of the week was slow, but it did end on a good note. Carol and Frank Herbst had the pleasure of fishing with the “Spanish Fly” on Thursday and wanted to try fly fishing for sails. They had plenty of shots, but not many hookups-they raised 10, hooked two, broke the line on one, pulled the hook on the other, but Carol finally caught one on conventional. Saturday, it was Carol and Frank’s second chance and they made the best of it! They were 7 for 7 on sails with conventional tackle.

On Friday, Larry Drivon and his group had a nice day-one large dorado over 50 lbs., released 4 sails and 7 small tuna all under 30 lbs.

The weather has been sunny and calm, so the inshore fishing should pick up if the weather stays dry.

There was not much to report from the Spanish Fly all week long until yesterday afternoon when the crew fished their seccond day with the Weisenburger group. At about 2pm, afterhanging in there for a day and a half, the boat finally foud the fish off Cabo Blanco and released 4 sails in about 90 minutes. That was much better than the previous day when they released 4 sails with the same group for the whole day.
The next day, the Spanish fly hosted the Barton group from Orlando and had a great day, they released 8 for 13.

It was another consistent week for the "Spanish Fly". On Wednesday, Eli Bailey and his family had a great day-they tried sail fishing and were 4 for 7 and then they came inshore and were able to release 2 big roosters and a few jacks. The next day, the crew hosted James Felds and his buddy, both from Florida. They decided to hook their own fish and did very well-released 7 for 18.
On Saturday, John Little and his group took a shot on Saturday, but it was a little different than the rest of the week-3 sails, a few small tuna, 4 dorado and a snapper.

The "Spanish Fly" had a much-needed rest on Wednesday and Thursday, but the crew was back fishing on Friday with the Rutskin group from Florida. They had a great day releasing sailfish. The three anglers were 6 for 18 hooking their own fish-good for them!
Today they will be trying their hooking skills inshore for roosters, snapper and anything else that comes along!

Fishing has been so unpredictable this year that it has been changing week to week and this week it changed for the better! The "Spanish Fly" has been hosting happy anglers who released an average of 7 sails per day. And, today, Mr. and Mrs. Horrar managed to release 9 sails and kept two dorado for dinner. We're glad the fish have returned!
The second day for Bob Horrar and his wife was fantastic-they released sails, 2 yellow fin tuna and a 250lb. blue marlin.

Good news and bad news from the "Spanish Fly". First the bad news: It's been slow all week for sails-the best day was Wednesday and they released 3. The rest of the week, the boat was lucky enough to release one or two a day. Now the good news: the tuna are running, no big ones, but average size. The boat has been catching an average of 10 a day up to 35lbs. Not really sushi grade, but good enough for the grill!

Not very good news to report this week. The green water moved in and extended out over 30 miles. This resulted in some very poor fishing conditions for the "Spanish Fly" and all the other boats in the marina. Average sail fish release per day was only two-very below average for our area. There were, however, some schools of tuna were spotted, but unfortunately, the fishermen on the "Spanish Fly" were only interested in sails-no sushi this week!
